Title: A Record of the Genealogy of the Chadwick As Made by Dr. A. Chadwick [December, 1852]
Description: Chadwick family, 1852. 8vo. Journal, now well-worn but intact and perfectly legible. We offer two items, as one lot, one concerning the Chadwick family and a claim for an inheritance; the other a commercial trading ledger from Pittsburgh. The Chadwick item is a blank 'exercise' book the heading on the first page of which reads: 'A Record of the Genealogy of the Chadwick as made by Dr. A. Chadwick / North Parduring (?) / Dec. 1852 / Concerning the Chadwick's Estate England'. It commences with 37 hand-written pages, beginning in December, 1852, and concluding in November, 1859. In essence, this journal is an attempt to prove the claim of the American side of the Chadwick family to a stupendous estate, allegedly being held in the British Court of Chancery. After the hand-written portion of the journal, there follows nine pages of newspaper clippings which deal with the claim, and then follows ten more hand-written pages and another page of newspaper clippings. Related docuements relative to the estate of Sir Andrew Chadwick may be found in the National Archives of Great Britain. The other item is a large ledger (described on the front board as a 'journal') of the Iron City Commercial College. It is in poor condition, but the entries are quite legible. They begin January 5, 1862, and continue through to April 30, 1862. They show cash balance, bills payable and receivable, and payments made (to whom, when, for what, and for how much). All entries are neatly written in what appear to be the same hand. Clearly, this business, located in Pittsburgh, was involved with importing and exporting, the schooner 'Josephine' being mentioned a number of times.
