Title: De-Classified Copies of Documents on the Naval Battles Off Cape St. George and Empress Augusta Bay, November, 1943
Description: Department of the Navy, 1984. Loose pages in plastic sleeve. Vice Adm. Gordon McLintock served as Superintendant of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, at Kings Point, NY, from 1948 to 1970. He was a naval historian, with a strong interest in the military career of Adm. Arleigh ('31-knot') Burke. Our offering consist of three items: (1) a photostatic copy of an ALS dated Nov. 19, 1984, from Adm, McLintock to Frank Uhlig, the editor of the Naval War College Review, following-up on McLintock's request for the 'critique of Admiral Burke's action off Cape St. George' (referencing the Battle of Cape St. George, fought off the southernmost tip of the island of New Ireland, part of Papua New Guinea, on November 26, 1943). (2) Mr. Uhlig's TLS reply, dated December 11, 1984, in which he says: 'Here is everything we have been able to find on the battles of Cape St. George and Empress Augusta Bay, in both of which Arleigh Burke participated as ComDesRon 23 (commander of destroyer corps 23)'. This includes a track chart of Empress Augusta Bay, a copy of a report from ComDesRon 23 to CinC First Fleet on the action off Cape St. George and Nauru Island, the Battle Experience bulletin on Cape St. George and Nauru Island and, lastly, the Combat Narrative for the Bougainville Landing and the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. The documents referenced in Uhlig's letter form item (3) of this offering. The Battle Experience bulletin is a 28-page photostat, the track chart is also a copy, and the report and narrative are quite large photostatic copies of uneven quality (of reproduction).
