Description: Paris, Boussod, Valadon / Baschet, 1886. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. 100.folio,,Albert Abraham Wolff (1835-1891) was a French writer, dramatist, journalist and art critic. He was educated in Paris and Bonn and from 1857 to 1859 worked as a secretary to Alexandre Dumas. In 1859 he became editor of 'Le Charivari' and then moved to 'Le Figaro' were he became a leading art critic and later editor of the newspaper. He supported the more traditional style of French painting and generally disliked impressionism. From 1885 until his death, he issued a series of annual reviews of French art, called 'Figaro-Salon'. Our offering is the second annual number. It is profusely illustrated with black-and-white, and sepia-toned, illustrations of the best French art of the day, and is accompanied by extensive commentray (written by Wolff). It retains its original cloth binding with gilt lettering, but the cloth is now very stained and soiled, and is partially separated from the front board, near the top. The hinges are tender but the binding remains strong and the contents are unaffected. Priced with all faults. .
