An early publication by the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature. Ross acquired the journal and miscellaneous items of equipment belonging to Lt. Image in 1966. Image was born in Bury, England (no date given), and when of age entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, graduating in 1852, and being appointed lieutenant in 1854. In August of that year, he sailed with his regiment (Royal North British Fusiliers) for the Crimea and took part in the Battles of Alma and Inkerman, and participated in the unsuccessful attack on the Redan. He was injured in battle, and mentioned several times in despatches. In 1855 he was promoted to captain, and returned home to convalesce in 1856; rejoining his regiment at Malta in 1858. He was a career soldier, and died in service from fever, in India in 1870. The journal reproduced here was kept by Image from 1854 to August, 1855. The entries have been typed (single-spaced) on to 8 1/2 x 11 paper (one side only), a photocopy of which has been bound together in the fashion mentioned above. Glossy photo pages of the regiment and some of Image's equipment are included. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.
