Previous owner inscription (Dated 1959). Richler's fourth novel established his reputation as a major novelist. It is an "amusing, well-paced story of an ambitious and amoral youth who develops into a ruthless manipulator of business deals." (-Story,Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature.) This is the true first edition, published by the British publisher Andre Deutsch through its Canadian office near Toronto, Ontario. Curiously, the book was printed in Holland. Bound in carmine cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. .
