Title: Photograph Album: Canadian Canoe Trip Through Indigenous Lands
Description: [Quebec], ca. 1911-1913. Cloth. Oblong 8vo. Worn and curling limp-canvas binding, black paper leaves, with 92 silver print photographs mounted with black photo-corners. Typed captions below most photographs, and a few handwritten corrections/additions. An engaging and delightful album of personal snapshots of canoe trips through Northern Quebec, 1911-1913. Typed captions pasted-in include information such as locations, dates, names, and the photographer’s relationship to the subjects. Many depictions of Indigenous peoples, their settlements, families, activities, and homes, including “Indian Women”, “Indian Burial Ground in the Wilderness”; “Indian Family Summer Camp”; an "Indian Cache in the Wilderness"; the content of the captions and ease of the subjects suggesting a friendly and familiar relationship with the photographer (ex. "Kapedkedeutchi -- Foam falls -- never before photographed -- I was probably the Third White Man to see it"). Hudson's Bay Company Posts and Trading Houses, churches, a Lumber Camp, French Habitant farms; a few showing the photographer himself, his canoe, tent, dog ("Mr. Del. Smalley"). One portrait of the photographer is captioned “On Indian Trail along Miskokan River”: this bears a Greek annotation translating roughly as “your dear” (- translation c/o Maggs Bros.). Many of the depicted areas and settlements were flooded in 1918 with the installation of the La Loutre Dam. Included is a portrait of a smiling Chief Gabriel Awashish in a birchbark canoe, whose descendants continued to push for compensation of the flooding of their land through 2016 when at long last, they won a Tribunal ruling. Locations mentioned include: Portage de la Montagne; St. Maurice River; Obijuan Lake; Cootijiwasten Lake; Kekendatch; Weymontechene (Wemotaci); Post de Roi on Chamouchouan Lake; La Riviere Croche, Manuan River; Mondonock River; Chaudiere Falls on St. Maurice River; Escalana River; Memmicassiouimany.
