Georg Ernst Stahl (1659-1734) was an influential German physician and chemist. He studied, then taught, at the University of Jena. In 1694, he was invited to become the second chair of Medicine at the newly founded university at Halle. Stahl founded the Phlogiston theory of combustion, and a vitalistic theory of medicine which significantly impacted 18th century medical theory. He retired from the University of Halle in 1716, when he was appointed physician to King Frederick I of Prussia, which post he held until his death. .
