John Stephens travelled together with Frederick Catherwood who made the drawings. Their discoveries of the lost Mayan civilization did much to awaken scientific interest in the ancient cultures of Central America. Stephens and Catherwood are credited for the discovery of the Maya civilization, and through their publications brought the Maya back into the minds of the Western World.
