"Roe Ethridge's photographs consist of an elusive combination which is difficult to identify with one genre whether it be portrait, landscape, still life and so on. On the surface, there is a slight possibility that it may be seen as a random set of stock-photographs. But his editing shows the distinct differences within them: contriving high quality image made with a large-format camera, and the intentional uses of mis-processed photographs. "Rocka-way, NY" consists not only of photographs taken in an area called Rockaway (NY), but also ones from other coastal areas such as Cornwall, Mumbai, frozen Colombia river and so on. These images create an image of a coast. That is Rockaway as an imitation of Rockaway. In several photo-graphs, a strategy of imitation can be seen such as a portrait of a man wearing a captain's hat. Even if not recognizing the man as Ethridge himself, the particular hat is an item of imitation. In addition, the repetition of the same image emphasizes a notion of imitation".
