Author: CAREW, BAMPFYLDE-MOORE; WILKINSON, C H [ED.] Title: The King of the Beggars Bampfylde-Moore Carew. The Life and Adventures of Mr Bampfylde-Moore Carew the Noted Devonshire Stroler and Dog-Stealer As Related by Himself During His Passage to the Plantations in America
Description: Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1931. Reprint. Brown hardback cloth spine over marbled boards. 230mm x 160mm (9" x 6"). xxiv, 307pp. B/w frontispiece portrait and folding map to rear. A (possibly fictional) account of the author's life travelling with gypsies around Britain, Ireland, mainland Europe and America. Although it states that the contents were "noted by himself during his passage to America" and it is likely that facts were supplied by Carew, the author was probably Robert Goadby, a printer in Sherborne, Dorset, who published an early edition in 1749. It has been suggested that Carew dictated his memoirs to Mrs Goadby.. G: in good condition without dust jacket as issued. Rebacked with cloth spine and with rubbing and darkening to marbled boards. Innre front hinge cracked. Sporadic foxing including to rear folding map .
