Brown hardback half-leather cover on marbled boards. 260mm x 200mm (10" x 8"). 400pp; 41 plates. 41 folding copper-engraved plates describing clock and watch mechanisms. Volume II only. Antoine Thiout the elder (Paris, 16921767) was a French clockmaker. He wrote Traite de l'Horlogerie Mechanique et Pratique in 1741 as a treatise on clockmaking which was widely read in his time. His plates describe clock and watch mechanisms which were often used in 18th century timepieces: for example a verge escapement powered by a spring encased in a barrel, and a regulation based on a cone-shaped fusee.. G : in good condition without dust jacket. Modern rebind with new endpapers. Bookplate to front pastedown. Pages browned (commensurate with age) and with edge-tears. Occasional marking (not impinging). Some plates with backing-tape repair. Some loss and minor wear to plate 41 .
