Title: Discipline: A Novel with a Memoir of the Author
Description: London: Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley, 1832. Reprint. Maroon hardback cloth cover. 180mm x 120mm (7" x 5"). 476pp. Engraved frontispiece and vignette on title page. Standard Novels No XVI [16]. Mary Brunton was a Scottish Novelist. Colburn and Bentley began the 'Standard Novels' series as a way to publish popular works of fiction that were either out of print or only available in expensive multi-volume formats. The crucial aspect of their editorial procedure was, where possible, to have the author revise the novel sufficiently so that a fresh copyright could be drawn upon the new publication. Given this opportunity, Mary Shelley was happy to have the chance to polish and expand upon her earlier production of Frankenstein. Unwittingly, however, in assigning the copyright of her work to the Standard Novels series, and she forestalled the novel's reappearance for a whole generation, with Frankenstein not being republished again in England until the 1860s.. Worn condition. Marking and fraying to cover. Loss to spine. Splitting to outer hinges. Inner hinge cracking. Browning to page edges. Sporadic thumbing and marking .
