According to the Encyclopedia Judaica, Zadoc (Zadig) Kahn 1839-1905, Kahn became the assistant to Chief Rabbi Isidor Lazare of Paris in 1866, appointed over many candidates in 1868, determined by his excellent thesis 'L'Esclavage selon la Bibile et le Talmud". He was very involved with the practical problems of settlement in Erez Israel...he witnessed the birth of the Zionist Movement, sympathizing with Herzl, "but officially he adopted the view that French Jews must in all aspecits of their lives be faithful citizens of France alone and must therefore reject the idea of a Jewish state in Palestine".
