In the play Solimán challenges Carlos to settle the war by a duel; the play ends with Solimán deserting Juan Sepusio, who in turn begs the Emperor's forgiveness. To sustain interest, a romantic and comic sub-plot is introduced: a Galician soldier-lackey, Buscarruido (Noise Seeker) is pursued by an amorous hermaphrodite, Mari Bernardo.
