Title: THE SAMNITES OF THE FOURTH CENTURY BC AS DEPICTED ON CAMPANIAN VASES AND IN OTHER SOURCES.
Description: London, nstitute of Classical Studies/Accordia Research Center, University of London, 1996. 1st edition 266 pp. cloth with dustjacket. Edited by Edward Herring. Foreword by Professor A. D. Trendall. First detailed study of how the ancient Samnites of the 4th century were depicted on pottery of the period. Mostly this means Campanian red-figure vase painting, although the author also discusses vases in other South Italian fabrics. Tomb-paintings also give us details, while references by ancient writers fill in some of the gaps in the information. Some items of Samnite armour and weaponry have survived and these allow us to assess the reliability and realism of the iconographic record. Contains 150 pages text followed by 166 b/w plates. 21,5 x 30,5 cm. near fine condition
