Set of four hardbacks in matching bindings of full brown calf, gilt titles to leather spine labels, 5 raised spine bands, elaborate gilt decoration & bordering, worn at all edges, chipping to some of the labels, bindings all secure, armorial bookplate (of Thomas Dampier, presumably the Dean of Durham, rather than his bibliophiliac son) to volumes 1 - 3, some bookworm holing to margins, no inscriptions, all maps and engravings complete. Volume 1 is a 3rd edition of 1757, printed by James Bettenham, for G. Hawkins, and has [iv] + xl + xliv + 634 pages. Volume 2 is a 2nd edition of 1756, printed by James Bettenham, for G. Hawkins, and has [iv] + xxxiv + 560 pages. Volume 3 is a 1st edition of 1764, published for J & R Tonson, G. Hawkins and T. Longman, and has [iv] + vi + 694 pages. Volume 4 is a 1st edition of 1771 (edited by Gilbert Stuart), published for G. Hawkins, W. Strahan, J. & F. Rivington et al, and has [iv] + viii + 464 pages + a very extensive unpaginated index to the whole work. A nice set, but very heavy - weighs nearly 8kg unpacked. Good.
