The first edition (1801-1864) of Charles Reynaud’s political and social overview of Brazil during the first thirty years since its declaration of independence from Portugal in 1822. The French writer and diplomat Reynaud was full of admiration for the developments that had taken place in Brazil since the renounciation of the links with Portugal and the establishment of an independent kingdom. Reynaud’s work is deeply concerned with the development of the young country. He traces the roots of the Constitutionalist Revolution that erupted in Portugal in the early 1820s and the implications that this movement had on Brazil. He furthermore analyses the industrial and agricultural development, including railroads, another foreign affairs, and immigration. Reynaud was a modern thinker of his time and his critical views of the European colonisation permeat the book. He highlights the many negative effects that these policies had on the development of Brazil and its people. He was also a monarchist, calling Brazil, among all other independent states of the Americas, “the only state which has had the good sense to keep the monarchy”. Charles Reybaud served as French consult in Bahia. He had not been to Brazil during the time that he wrote Le Brésil.
