Description: [8], 794, [13], [1 blank]; 175, [1 blank] pp.Late edition of a medical work including 1000 medical case studies, compiled by the Paracelsian physician and alchemist Martin Ruland the elder (1532-1602) in Lauingen. The work was originally published in 10 instalments in the years 1578 to 1596 at Basel, each part containing 100 treatments. Each entry gives the name of the patient, the nature of the ailment, Ruland's treatment (sometimes with recipes for the medicine used) and the results. The ideas of Paracelsius (1493-1541), relying more on observation than on ancient authorities and making use of not only traditional herbs but also minerals and chemically synthesized medicines, were still regarded as radical and suspicious at this time, so Ruland needed to advertise the efficacy of his methods more extensively and more convincingly than those who could point to ancient authorities for their methods and medicines. Added at the end is Ruland's Medica practica ..., containing an extensive list of human diseases and pains, arranged alphabetically, each followed by some possible medicines or remedies. The book closes with Rulands Appendix de dosibus ..., commenting of the proper proportions of compound medicines. With an early owner's inscription on first flyleaf "Ex libris Arnoldi Fréfon Waremiensis 1728". Occasionally a small spot, a few pages slightly frayed along the edges, otherwise in very good condition.l Krivatsy 10030; not in Wellcome.
