First edition of a history of fortification by the Prussian general Alexander Friedrich Adolf Heinrich von Zastrow (1801-1875), who served in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). It deals with fortification methods by different military writers and engineers, starting with Albrecht Dürer's treatise on fortification, first published in 1527. In the next chapter, on Italian fortification, he praises the military engineers of the Renaissance for adjusting the shape of fortresses to suit the terrain. Other chapters deal with the Dutch (Van Coehoorn), French (Vauban, Cormontaigne) and German (Spekel, Rimpler) methods of fortification, illustrated with ground plans and profiles on the folding plates.Foxed and a water stain in the upper outside corner throughout, also affecting the plates. A fair copy. Binding rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good.
