Author: KOCKERS, George. Title: Nauwkeurige afbeelding van de Nationale Vergadering in Den Haag.Middelburg, 1797. 1mo (77 x 63 cm).Stipple engraving (plate size: 68 x 61.5 cm).
Description: Large engraving of a meeting during the first session of the first democratically elected parliament of (most of) the Netherlands. The Batavian Republic was the new revolutionary state which replaced the United Republic of the Netherlands in 1795. The first session of the democratically elected parliament lasted from March 1796 to August 1797 and had the important task of writing a constitution. The print shows most of the room in which the parliament convened: a former ballroom of the old Stadtholder which was used as a chamber by the parliament up until 1992. Most of the 126 members, wearing a black sash with the word "representant" (representative), are depicted. Seated in the large chair at the left, is the chairman accompanied by several secretaries. To the right of the chairman's dais, is the raised stand from which a representative addresses the assembly. Apparently, the person standing next to him is the Frisian farmer Dirk Cornelis Kuiken (1746-1811). The boxes between the pilasters, opposite the chairman, were for the use of important visitors and the large boxes at the sides (one of which is shown) were for the use of common citizens with a small section (at the top left of the print) for the use of journalists. A representative at the bottom has a book in front of him titled "Regten des volks" (rights of the people), possibly a translation of Thomas Paine's Rights of man from 1791.With a few creases and tears at the extremities; a very good copy.l Muller, Historieplaten 5455a; Atlas van Stolk 5373.
