Description: "238" [= 239], [1 blank] pp.First edition of a work written in defence of the Jesuits, after they were temporarily banished from France in 1594, a few years before. Addressed to the members of the court of the parliament in Paris, it attempts to refute slander against the Jesuits. This first edition is very rare on the market, as we have been unable to find it in any sales records of the past hundred years.The work, which was actually published in Paris, is directed against the plea by Simon Marion (1540-1605) before the Parliament of Paris, that resulted in a decree forbidding a former Jesuit, Porsan, from taking up the post of rector at the Lyon municipal school. That judgement was in fact a confirmation of the Jesuit-expulsion decree of 1594. Marion was a famous lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, and a zealous catholic. His pleas were published in 1594 as Actions forenses.René de la Fon is the pseudonym of the Jesuit Louis Richeome (1544-1625), who was a prolific author. He was appointed Father Provincial of his Order in France twice, and was a zealous defender of the catholic religion against the Protestants. It was a in large part because of him that the Jesuit residence in Bordeaux was allowed to reopen its college in 1603. His collected works were published in 1628 in Paris by Sebastien Cramoisy.With a monogram on the verso of the front flyleaf ("PL"). The spine is slightly stained, the lower front tie is broken.
