The first volume contains the general text, giving a description of the 120 colour-printed plates of carpets and rugs. The plates were originally postcards issued by the Berlin rug dealer Von Oettingen, collectively bought by Grote-Hasenbalg after Von Oettingen's business went bankrupt.Bookplate on front paste-down of each volume, map in vol. 1 slightly frayed in margin.
