From 1867 to 1870 Recaredo succeeded his father as director of the newspaper publishing house El Mercurio established in Valparaiso in 1827. During a short stay in Paris in 1871, he contacted the Paris printing firm Lemercier for the lithographs in his Chile ilustrado. The work is dedicated to Vicuña Mackenna (1831-1886), who was a Chilean writer, journalist, historian and politician, and at that moment mayor of Santiago (1872-1875).With an owner's inscription on the first silk endpaper ("Valparaiso, Agosto 27, 1878, Camilo Bayle") and another by the same hand ("Camilo Bayle") on the second endpaper.
