Warming assisted the Danish paleontologst Peter Wilhelm Lund ("the father of Brasilian paleontology", 1801-1880) during 1863-1866 on his expedition to Lagoa Santa in the state of Minas Geraes. He described the flora of the area and the adaptations of the plants to the hasards of "cerrado" (drought and fire) in this work, which still stands as a paradigm of ecological study.
