Description: Antuerpiae (Anvers), Christophori Plantini, 1588, pt. in-8vo, pp. 1-556 [619-624] (Errors: 396 for 369, 176 for 576, 547-556 for 609-618), ms. ex libris 'Antonio Nanner Beronensis [Beromünster], Anno Domini (15)92 die vero vigesimo secundo mensis junii', beautiful and well conserved Swiss? panel-stamped binding (16th C.), pigskin, 1 of the 2 clasps, 1st panel the crucified Christ with 3 men in contemporary clothings and the words 'Ecce Agnus Dei qui tollit peccata mundi', 2nd panel the resurrection with the words 'ero mors tua o mors, morsus tuus ero inferne' (Os. 13, 14), ¶ The third of the four volumes of the edition issued in 1586-1588, of the collection of homelies on each day of the year by the Spanish ascetic theologian Luis of Grenada, who became a Dominican at Grenada in 1525 and studied in Valladolid from 1529 till 1534. From 1534 till 1545, he was in a convent near Cordua where he met the famous Juan of Avila. He was appointed provincial of this order for the Portuguese province in 1556. His works have had a major influence on Charles Borromée and François de Salles, who wrote in 1603 to a bishop: 'Ayez Grenade tout entier, et que ce soit votre second bréviaire; il dressera votre esprit à l'amour de la vraie dévotion et à tous les exercices spirituels qui vous sont nécessaires'. The present Conciones de tempore were first issued by Plantin in 1577-1579 in three volumes, and reprinted in 1581, 1583-1584 and 1586-1588. Each volume was sold separately, which explains why there are no complete copies known of the whole edition. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl.
