La première édition allemande parut à Augsbourg en 1777. L'auteur supposé, Paul De Stetten (mort à Augsbourg, le 12 février en 1808, à l'âge de 78 ans) fut maire d'Augsbourg et conseiller intime du roi de Bavière. Supercheries II; Cohen 959. First French edition of this fictional account of the life of a widow and the members of her family, translated from 'Briefe eines Frauenzimmers aus dem XV. Jahrhundert, nach alten Urschriften', 1777. With a lengthy quasi-academic preface in which the novel (based on papers newly discovered and handed down through generations) is placed in its historical perspective, so that accepted dates, such as seige of the fortress of Billenbach and the murder of the Marquard de Schellenberg, are challenged and biographical details of historical figures are corrected. The authenticity of the manuscript was only doubted on one score: that of the extreme unlikeliness of there having been two women in Germany in the fifteenth century who were able to read and write.
