First German edition, with the illustrations of the Dutch original edition. 63 clear prints of the emblematic engravings, all compositions by the famous 17th century Dutch artist Romein de Hooghe (1645-1708), a nephew of Pieter de Hooch. 'This iconology deals with classical mythology and christian symbolism. The editor Westerhovius, a friend of de Hooghe, gives interesting bibliographical data on the artist in the preface.' Each of the compositions show quite a number of human or mythical persons, animals, objects, situations, etc., some of these with a small printed capital letter referring to the written description of each of them. Plus one full-page engraved portrait of 'Mr. Romein de Hooghe', engraved by J. Houbraken after a painting by H. Bos, and one full-page coat-of-arms of 'Johann Hartewig Ernst Freyherrn von Bernstorf'. A last leaf with directions for the bookbinder should be found at the end of the volume but has not been bound in (often missing). Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl.
