Graffenrieds Biograf Egger stellte bereits 1896 fest: 'wohl nur selten mehr zu finden'. Graffenried studierte Arithmetik und Astronomie im Selbststudium; seine Arithmeticae Logisticae, 'zu Unrecht ignoriert' (Schärlig), ist vollständiger und reicher - nicht zuletzt wegen der unzähligen Beispiele - als viele der von ihm zitierten Quellen. J. H. Graf stellt in seiner Studie über Graffenried fest, dass es sich um das führende Werk zur Mathematik in Süddeutschland des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts handelt. 'Und viele seiner Regeln sind auch eine Orginalität. Man darf also der Meinung sein, er sei mit Unrecht quasi unbekannt. Er hat (fast) alle damals vorhandenen Bücher flei§ig studiert. Und auch wenn er sich mehr oder weniger als Kompilator vorstellt, mu§ man feststellen, da§ er dennoch ein sehr vollständiges und bemerkenswertes Werk hinterlassen hat. Es ist nicht übertrieben zu sagen, da§ man seine arithmetische Logistik als das Hauptwerk in diesem Gebiet in Süddeutschland zu Anfang des 17. Jahrhundert ansehen kann' (Schärlig). - Etwas fleckig und gebräunt, wie oft, mit Faltspuren und einigen kleinen Wurmlöchern, blasser Stempel einer Klosterbibliothek auf dem schönen, in Rot und Schwarz gedruckten ersten Titelblatt. Mathematics. - Very rare first edition with the correct date 1618 (Graffenried's biographer Egger already stated in 1896: 'probably quite difficult to find a copy'). He studied arithmetic and astronomy on his own; his Arithmeticae Logisticae libri III, 'unjustly ignored' (Schärlig), are more complete and richer - not at least because of its innumerable examples - and the many sources he cites. J. H. Graf, in his study of Graffenried, states that it is the leading work on mathematics in southern Germany in the early 17th century. 'And many of his rules are also orginal. One may therefore think that he is unjustly quasi-unknown. He diligently studied (almost) all the books available at the time. And even if he presents himself more or less as a compiler, it must be said that he nevertheless left behind a very complete and remarkable body of work. It is not an exaggeration to say that his arithmetical logistics can be considered the main work in this field in southern Germany at the beginning of the 17th century' (Schärlig). - Stains and browning, as often, with traces of folding and some small wormholes, pale stamp of a monastery library on the first title page printed in red and black.
