V: Bound by Westleys & Co. London). ¶ Volume 1: 158 p. / 2) 140 p. / 3) 109 p. / 4) 127 p. / 5) 134 p. / 6) 106 p. In all illustrated with 144 original photographs, some pages & plates loosening or loose. A.o. portraits of Faraday - Lyell - Owen - Thackery - Tyndall - Gould - Dickens - Darwin - de Candolle etc. etc. According to Lorraine Portch of the Natural History Museum, who has done some research into the subject, the 'men of eminence' were invited to submit their own biographies ! Charles Darwin recognised the value of having photographs in his later books, and some of Edward's images were published in 'The expression of emotions in man and animals' (1872)'.
