'A eu dans son temps le plus grand succès, et a été souvent cité' (Brunet). Simon MAIOLUS (1520-1597), Bishop of Volturara, was an Italian canon lawyer. This encyclopedic work, Dies caniculares, translates to "Dog days" but covers a wide range of topics in natural history. First published in 1597, the book had several later editions. Maiolus is mentioned in the early history of the explanation of fossils by Charles Lyell as a pioneer of volcanic description. The text cannot be considered entirely scientific, however, since it also discusses ghosts, spirits, vampires, and magic. Index at rear. Latin text. Please notify before visiting to see a book.
