The book contains chapters on lake cities, the Alps, glaciers, ancestry, slavery, battles, the reformation, remarkable men, with a special chapter of the 'alpine climbers', ethnology, etc. The full-page woodcut illustrations nearly all show views of some of the famous alpine regions, as well as a few views of towns and villages: Basle, Milan, Gersau, Freyburg, Einsiedeln, Zurich, Lausanne, the interior of a chalet, Chamounix and Mont Blanc.
