Illustrated with 24 woodcut plates. The undertitle of the first edition '... by an American resident' is different from this edition, but with the same number of pages and illustrations. The book contains chapters on lake cities, the Alps, glaciers, ancestry, slavery, battles, the reformation, remarkable men, with a special chapter of the 'alpine climbers', ethnology, etc. The full-page woodcut illustrations nearly all show views of some of the famous alpine regions, as well as a few views of towns and villages: Basle, Milan, Gersau, Freyburg, Einsiedeln, Zurich, Lausanne, the interior of a chalet, Chamounix and Mont Blanc.
