A series of essays by Walter Edward Gudgeon CMG (4 September 1841 - 5 January 1920). He was a farmer, soldier, historian, magistrate and colonial administrator. The essays collected here cover a period of about 20 years and describe the history of the Maori, including commentaries on migrations and the causes of intertribal warfare. He wrote several books, all of which, like this one, were published under the name of his father Thomas Wayth Gudgeon.
