How does the young artist Kees van Dongen manage to break through in Paris and quickly become one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century? This question is central to this book. Van Dongen belonged to the vanguard of Dutch artists who sought innovation in Paris around 1900. There he embraced the avant-garde and in 1905 Picasso invited him to move into a space in the studio Le Bateau-Lavoir, in Montmartre. In this environment he developed into a painter of figures and an innovator through color and touch. This book shows highlights and key pieces from Van Dongen's oeuvre: a total of 75 paintings and 30 drawings. The focus is on the period that would lead to Kees van Dongen's world fame. - Text in Dutch. - - This catalogue was published to accompany an exhibition held at the Singer Museum Laren, January 17-May 7, 2023.
