Special attention is paid to the period 1938-1946, during which Hofker and his wife Maria Hofker-Rueter worked in the then Dutch East Indies. An undisputed highlight in this Indonesian oeuvre are the many hundreds of paintings, drawings and watercolours that Willem Hofker made until the end of 1943, partly in the last pre-war 'golden years', partly already under Japanese occupation. The stories are partly first-hand by Maria Hofker. The book is also chock-full of photos, drawings and prints of watercolours, etchings and paintings by Hofker.
