Written around 1520, the codex contains treatises on arithmetic and geometry, architecture, the geometric construction of letters, optics and the use of perspective in painting, as well as a collection of recipes for painting materials. Hundreds of pen drawings accompany the texts and make their subjects clear. 500 years after they were written, all of the treatises are made available for the first time in their entirety in the form of a critical edition and a complete reproduction of the codex. In addition, there is a detailed appreciation of their author, Antonio da Faenza, and his other artistic work as a painter and architect. Detailed comparisons place his writings and his work in the context of the era. What unfolds is a fascinating portrait of an extraordinary doctus artifex who deserves to step out of the shadow of the great masters of his time.
