These constitute a means of transmitting knowledge and skills, they contribute to shaping new representations both in terms of history and in terms of spaces or ecclesiology. The conditions of production of historical texts, their circulation, their uses and the authority conferred on them then allow us to examine how Latins, Greeks and Orientals take into account the internal or external otherness of Christianity in its very definition. The quest for origins, most often intended to establish an authority, can thus be put to the service sometimes of a critical reflection on the present situation, sometimes of a strategy of legitimization of a future enterprise. Focusing on the West and the Christian East, from Constantinople to Ethiopia via Armenia, this work nevertheless concerns a Mediterranean regional area where, with the exception of its north-western part, Islamic powers are gaining importance to the detriment of Christian powers.
