Contemp. h.roan, covers covered with 19th century blindstamped stamped decorative green paper.Large 4to. - Edges of cover worn; some skilfully closed tears with japanese paper.Rare complete copy with the large fold-out map of North Holland and the beautifully hand-colored map of the nieuwen Aarden-Dijk. - - First and only edition of a short treatise by Dutchman Seger Lakenman (baptized December 26, 1689 Hem - buried August 24, 1747 Bovenkarspel) on strengthening the dikes of West Friesland, now the northern part of the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. He was a notary and mayor. He studied law in Leiden. He worked as a notary in Hem from 1709 to 1716, from 1717 to 1719 in Oosterblok, and from 1719 to 1746 in Bovenkarspel. He was also orphan master from 1722 to 1725 and was elected mayor of Bovenkarspel for 6 years between 1726 to 1741. He was also secretary of the Dijkgraafschap Drechterland. During his time, the shipworm came to the area and caused considerable damage to the sea dikes. In 1732 the dike council organized a competition to see who would come up with a solution to this problem. In this publication of 1733, he proposed constructing a sleeper dike behind the existing sea dike, so that the hinterland would not be flooded in the event of a disaster. # STCN 184404789.
