Title: [Albumen photograph:] Amstel & Nieuwe Keizersgracht.
Description: Amsterdam, [c. 1865-1870]. Technique: Albumen photograph mounted on cardboard. Size: 18,0 x 24,0 cm. Professionally matted on museum-cardboard. - Sharp impression in very good condition.* Very attractive, original 19th century large-sized format by pionering Amsterdam photographer Pieter Oosterhuis (1816-1885). Oosterhuis was initially known as a painter and was a member of the Dutch artist society Arti et Amicitia. During the 1850's the first exhibition of photography and heliography was held at the society. Although daguerreotype offered new business-opportunities for painters such as Oosterhuis, only 8 were registered as such in Amsterdam, which was very few compared to other European cities. Oosterhuis might be one of the very first of them, as he was already registered in 1853/1854 in a Amsterdam directory. This was certainly true for stereotype photography which usually depicted topographical scenes from Amsterdam. Cityscapes would be his major genre. Other photographers / publisher's would later follow this subject such as Jacob Olie, Andries Jager and P.H.J. Reynet de la Rue. Oosterhuis along with these later two would start to produce and sell photographs like these in small concertino albums, often sold as souvenirs and often came in standard (smaller) sizes that are called cabinet-photographs. Larger impressions from these photographers are very scarce (such as this photo).
