A German painter trained at the time of the New Objectivity and in contact with the European avant-gardes - Italian metaphysical painting, international surrealism -, he was thrown onto the roads of exile by Hitler's accession to power. Interned in 1940 in the Saint-Cyprien camp, in the south of France, he escaped and lived in hiding in Brussels. Arrested on June 20, 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz on July 31 with his wife, Felka Platek. This first retrospective, in France, recreates, through his most emblematic works, the journey of a modern artist who gave some of their most memorable representations of oppression and persecution.
