Description: Amsterdam, Stads Drukkerij, 1873. Lithographed plan in b./w. with the extension and Vondelpark printed in colour. Size (exc. margins): ca. 70 x 90 cm. Matted. - some restorations (tears strenghtened with Japanese paper, two small pieces restored affecting the margin and a few centimeters in the border and corner of the image; though not noticeable).* Very decorative plan of the first southern extension of Amsterdam. This coloured area covers present day P.C. Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Museumplein, Stadhouderskade, Marie Heinekenplein and ending at the Jacob van Campenstraat. While the complete map depicts the area between Roking and the city-borders (Nieuwer-Amstel). After the first full-scale extension-plan by J.G. van Niftrik was refuted in 1866, elements of his design returned in later plans, such as this one. Visible in Van der Stok's plan is a concentric street-pattern which was later adopted in Jan Kalff's full plan of the extension of Amsterdam. Most streets on this plan are actually constructed, with the exception of Museum-plein where the Rijksmuseum was planned to be constructed as a city-gate for the newly build blocks of villa's on the south of the Museum. The villa's were never constructed and the square was used as a location for several world-exhibitions (colonial, trade etc.). Extremely rare plan, only one other copy is kept in the collection of the Amsterdam city archives. Not in Hameleers.
