Description: Collection of 19 original issues of the French sports newspaper L'Equipe, published between July 2 - July 26, 1948. Present are the newspapers published on the day of the 2nd stage - 6th stage, 11th stage - 21st stage, including the newspapers published on the three of the rest days (July 17, July 18 & July 21). Not present in this collection are the newspapers published on the days of the 1st stage and the 7th stage t./m. 10th stage. - All newspapers are in neat to reasonably neat condition. Some have some discoloration & minor damage.Interesting rare collection describing the 35th edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 30 June to 25 July 1948. It consisted of 21 stages over 4,922 km. The race was won by Italian cyclist Gino Bartali, who had also won the Tour de France in 1938. Bartali had almost given up during the race, but drew inspiration from a phone call from the Italian prime minister, who asked him to win the Tour de France to prevent civil unrest in Italy after assassination attempt against Palmiro Togliatti, the former General Secretary of theItalian Communist Party. With each stage win of Bartali (seven in total), the Italian excitement about the Tour de France increased, and the political tensions quieted. Bartali also won the mountains classification.
