Author: Rooses, Max. Title: Het schildersboek. Nederlandsche schilders der negentiende eeuw in monographieën door tijdgenooten. Uitgegeven onder toezicht van Max Rooses. [Deel 1 - 5]. [Complete set of 5 volumes of the Deluxe edition].
Description: Amsterdam, Uitgeversmaatschappij Elsevier, 1898 - 1901. 5 vols. 238, 253, 258, 248, 278 pp. Num. text ills (wood engraving, phototype & stereotype) & [120] b./w. plates (60 stereotypes, 33 photoengravings & 27 orig. etchings by Philip Zilcken). Orig. uniform publisher's hardcover bindings (h.cloth with parchment with gilt lettering and decorative Art Nouveau elements in green). 4to. - Each volume with ex-libris; later endpapers; covers with light shelfwear (very sl. dam. & very sl. soiled). This is a complete set of the deluxe edition published in 34 copies: this is number 19 of the 17 copies with the text printed on art paper, and the etchings and photogravures on Dutch vellum paper (in the first 17 copies the text is printed on Japanese paper and proofs on Chinese paper of the etchings and photogravures have been added). The original etchings in this deluxe edition should have the master stamps Avant la lettre. That is not the case with the etchings present in this set. The captions to the etchings are printed on the tissue guards (just like in the regular edition). Presumably during production it was decided to implement this for the entire edition and that is why this annotation was not added in the end. - vIn total, this five-part set describes 60 Dutch nineteenth-century painters. The work includes descriptions about Jacob Maris, H.W. Mesdag, Willem Maris, J.C.K. Klinkenberg, Thérèse Schwartze, J. Bosboom, Jozef Israels, J.H. Weissenbruch, Anton Mauve, Matthijs Maris, and many others.
