He was was considered one of Napoleon's more formidable opponents and one of the greatest generals of the French Revolutionary Wars. These selected writings in the series Millitärische Klassiker are published with notes and explanations by a circle of Prussian officers with Major G. von Marées as chief editor for the entire series. The editor of this volume is the Austrian Generalmajor von Waldtstätten. The selected writings include the main work Grundsätze der höheren Kriegskunst (1806) and the first theoretical part (1st part - 1st main section) of Grundsätze der Strategie, erlecht durch die Darstellung des Feldzuges 1796 in Deutschland.
