William Woodville Rockhill (1854-1914) was an American diplomat, orientalist, honourary member of the Russian Geographical Society and American ambassador in Russia between 1898-1899. He was one of the first Americans who learned the Tibetan language and corresponded many years with Thupten Gyatso, the thirteenth Dalai Lama. In the 1880’s he went on two expeditions to Western-China, Mongolia and Tibet.
