Nachmanson was of Jewish descent. He became a doctor of philosophy at Uppsala University in 1905, an associate professor of Greek language and literature there in 1904 and a professor of Greek at the University of Gothenburg in 1919. Nachmanson became an honorary doctor of medicine in 1924. Nachmanson appeared as a connoisseur of late Greek language. His later research led him into the field of Greek medicine.
