(Spicilegium Romanum [a cura di Angelo Mai]. Tomus I).Rare first volume of the Spicilegium Romanum (a complete set consits of 10 volumes) containig the complete first printed edition of the Vite by Vespasiano da Bisticci (1421-1498). Vespasiano was an Italian humanist and librarian of the early Renaissance period, active in Firenze. Born in the parish of Santa Lucia in Bisticci, Vespasiano was not a trained writer but nevertheless left behind 103 biographies of contemporaries. His manuscripts, which he himself regarded as preparatory notes for a Latin series of biographies, were only rediscovered in 1839 by Cardinal Angelo Mai, who published them in 1839. These biographies are a good representation of the atmosphere of the Firenze of the 15th century and are still a source today of the social relationships, behaviors and manners and events of the time. Reading the Vite is said to have prompted Jacob Burckhardt to write his most important work Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien. In addition to this Vite, Vespasiano is also known for his work Libro delle lodi e commemorazioni delle donne illustri and he has left a rich correspondence. This copy contains a handwritten dedication by Luigi Razzolini (1819-1881), famous scholar and bibliographer.
