Mounted on cardboard (28,6 x 21 cm) & with 19th century handwritten captions in ink below the photo. - Photograph in good condition; sharp impression; cardboard sl. worn & sl. soiled (not affecting the photograph).* Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman; 1807 - 23 April 1880) was a pioneering Indonesian Romantic painter of Arab-Javanese ethnicity. He was considered to be the first modern artist from Indonesia (then Dutch East Indies), and his paintings corresponded with nineteenth-century romanticism which was popular in Europe at the time. He also expressed his cultural roots and inventiveness in his work. In this famous photograph taken by Woodbury & Page, Saleh is seated and holding a book in one hand.
