In orig. embossed red cloth binding, frontcover with richly gilt decotations: title & floral motifs. 4to.Exceedingly rare publication about the Dutch warship Zr.Ms. Heiligerlee, one of the first monitor ships in the Netherlands. Composed by the authors, both lieutenants 2nd class, to give a brief outline to other Dutch navy officers of this new ship type. - The Zr.Ms. Heiligerlee was built in 1967 in Birkenhead in Great Britain by the Gebr. Laird on behalf of the Dutch goverment. Launched in 1868 and originally named Panther, the vessel was renamed Heiligerlee after its arrival in the Netherlands. A monitor was the class of relatively small warship which was neither fast nor strongly armoured but carried disproportionately large guns. They were used by some navies from the 1860s, during the First and Second World Wars, and by the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. # NHSM, Cat. der bibliotheek (1960), p. 785; OCLC Worldcat locates only 4 copies worldwide (all four in Dutch libraries).
