Description: A Paris, Chez Basan & Poignant, [1775]. Lettterpress title-page, engraved portrait of Weïrotter by F[erdinand] Schmutzer & 181 engravings (3 aquatinted) by F.E. Weïrotter on 87 lvs. Bound in fine early 19th century blue moroccan h.leather binding, spine richly gilt with floral ornaments and raised in compartments, cover and endpapers marbled, leather cornerpieces. Large 4to. - On the title-page & verso of last print a small stamp of Fr. Hannet (Brussels, 1902). - Corners & spine sl. worn, few plates with light waterstaines (affecting the edges of two engravings).Early Basan / Poignant edition of the engraved works of the German artist Frans Edmund Weïrotter (1733-1771). An interesting collection of 181 landscape prints engraved by the artist (incl. some title-plates). Born in Germany, Weïrotter traveled through Europe, expanding his artistic skills at every stop. He was teached by the German engraver Johann Georg Wille in Paris after 1758. He was influenced by Rome during his two years stay from 1763 to 1765. In 1767 he becam professor of landscape drawing and painting at the academy in Vienna. After his death 288 of the etched plated of Weïntrotter were acquired by Basan & Poignant, publishers in Paris. In 1775 they published this rare a large quarto edition with a selection of impressions from these plates.
