Description: Hilversum, Verloren, 1999. 576 pp. B./w. ills. Orig. hardcover (boards). The Amsterdam Museum houses the collection C.P. van Eeghen, consisting of drawings, prints and books illustrated by the Dutch artist Jan Luyken (1649-1712) and his son Casper (1672-1708). The Luykens were among the most important book illustrators of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Their prints were often reprinted, copied or imitated in later centuries. Father and son Luyken also occupy a prominent place in the field of emblematic literature from the aforementioned period. The collection, mainly brought together on the basis of these book illustrations, consists of more than 1000 drawings - mostly preliminary studies for the prints that appeared in the books - 10,000 individual prints and approximately 1050 bindings and is the most complete Luyken collection in the world.
